As this wave started to drain off the reef I grabbed another camera with a wide angle lens attached. Just a reminder of how beautiful Bali is.... This past Sunday took a trip past Ubud to Pura Tirtha Empul, a holy and sacred temple that has a natural spring used to purify visitors.

It was raining like nobody's business, but it was PACKED. Sunday is definitely family day and while there were a few tourists, it was mostly Balinese. I'm jumping in next time, I was designated purse/umbrella holder for my girlfriend this time, but I would love to come back here on a full moon. Breathtaking...

But there is also Paul Mooney, who during the 70's until now was the driving force behind the aforementioned comedic greats, always writing for them or as an opening act. Don't get it twisted though, Paul Mooney doesn't mind being in the background, to put lightly in his own words, he's just "too black for Hollywood".

This book is much to do with his rise with Richard Pryor, his best friend, and is a great read for anyone who loves comedians who speak the truth. Remember Negrodamus on the Chappelle Show? Remember Homie The Clown on In Living Color? Remember RICHARD PRYOR?

Hands down my most favorite rock group of all time. Forget The Stones, forget The Beatles... nothing says hedonistic creative inspiration like Led Zeppelin. This 500-page biography recounts their separate beginnings, their once in a lifetime chance meeting, and every album broken down in detail from what was going on in their lives, and the formation of the tracks included...

This is some serious Led Zep nerd shit. It's a story of their rise and eventual fall from heaven, directly told from the members themselves and the assistants and friends who surrounded this juggernaut through it all. I have to admit, you always hear the stories of 70's rock bands and their drug induced craziness but to read the stories is a true eye opener on what was the "norm" back then. You also find out just how much artists "borrow" from older artists, makes Elvis look like a saint at times... Timeline runs all the way through Bonzo's unfortunate death and the many attempted tries at a reunion tour until their 2008 farewell concert... Load up your iPod and press play cause there is only one way to read this...

One of my favorite mixes to chill or party to.

Here's a mix from Eli Escobar back in 2009, it's Live at the Hotel on Rivington Penthouse in NYC. Beautiful spot to throw a party, and I can only assume the crowd was feeling the music because the mix is excellent, all around good house to disco to old techno stuff...enjoy!

I hate to be on someone's jock so much btw, but Eli Escobar has my respect as a song selector/producer, good music is good music and he is consistently putting it out there right now. (Beware the 1-minute pause near the beginning, maybe somebody got tipsy and accidentally hit the pause button...)

I think every DJ who is into the "MAW" sound has attempted to do a tribute mix at some point in their life. With the amount of selections to choose from, and the variations of style within those selections, the mix will be filled with quality music no matter what...and even then, you've only touched the tip of the iceberg.

I'm happy I did this in 2001 though, it was right after their switch into the "Elements Of Life" direction and therefore, an end to that driving sound that made them famous in the 1990's. Their hypnotic 5AM-esque dubby production style is a thing of the past, I guess everyone has to mellow out sooner or later...

Back in 2005 there was this guy named Fitsum who was a great photographer, designer, and all around interesting guy to have a beer with (I don't know why I'm talking of him in the past tense cause he's still alive)... We shared thoughts on music, shots of GM, and whatever we felt like spilling out of our brains whenever we ran into each other.

At the time he was kinda throwing some parties at some local dives in DC and had put together a mini-website dedicated to music not of the norm and asked me to do a couple of mini-mixes for him. Here are both of them merged into one mix, each was originally 20 minutes or so, and running the spectrum of headphone nodders (Platinum Pied Pipers, Roy Ayers, MF Doom, Massive Attack, Rah Digga, Marvin Gaye, Junior Murvin, Edan, Brand New Heavies, Moodymann, etc.). Not alot of mixing involved here, just some good driving and pre-game music...

The website is still up if you wanan check it out, and has a bunch of other mixes from DC djs that were hanging/mixing back in those days...good stuff for sure.

.... "Outdoor Sex", the name sums it up. I made this mix in July 2001 and I have no idea what I was trippin' off of but it musta been good to come up with a name like this. This was when Jon Cutler's "It's Yours" first came out and before it saturated the global Starbucks and Ibiza playlists, I gotta admit, it's still a damn good song if you can stomach more than 2 minutes of it. Some of my favorite tracks are included on this mix as well like the deep bouncy number by CRS (great audio sample) and the Tears Of Velva house classic that seriously makes me wanna dance every time I hear it. Take a listen and hopefully the title will inspire something...

Ballin' Review #24 - Bloo Lagoon Village

Thanks to my girlfriend I finally made my way over to the eastern side of Bali for a great mini-vacation weekend. About 1.5 hours drive from Sanur brought us to the Padangbai/Candidasa area and our final destination, Bloo Lagoon Village.

Bloo Lagoon bills themselves as a "sustainable tourism" complex with much of the village leaving almost no carbon footprint. Just walk through their grounds and you'll see just how much it is still a part of its natural surroundings. All the villas are unique in their own way and are VERY spacious with most having awesome views of Padangbai below (it's located on the side of a hill). If you're an outdoors-ish kinda person you'll love it, if you're more of a hotel-room introvert then the bugs will make you run back to Seminyak.

Was honestly just great to get away from south Bali and mingle with the hill people (Lothar anyone!?). Obviously the seafood everywhere is ridiculously fresh and in abundance. Also checked out Pantai Putih a lil past Candidasa for a great beach spot that i'm assuming not a lot of people know about. East Bali is pretty dope, cooler temps and less of a hassle, not to mention some great views across to the neighboring islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lombongan, and Lombok.

Just saw 'A Good Day To Die' film documentary about Dennis Banks and his early start with AIM (American Indian Movement) to the final days when he was on the run from the law. Have to admit, this is all information I'm familiar with but seeing Dennis Banks give his personal accounts on his fellow AIM members and what was actually going through their minds during the events, such as the taking of the BIA Building in DC and the stand-off at Wounded Knee in 1973, was eye opening.

Wouldn't have seen this anytime soon if it weren't for the Balinale International Film Festival, some really great films every year from independent and already established directors. Waiting patiently for Friday's premiere of the Banksy doc 'Exit Through The Gift Shop' ...

"The Road" - Cormac McCarthy

Holy shit. I finally finished a book. Been awhile since I picked one up but felt compelled when my girlfriend is yellin' James Patterson in one ear and my sister is yellin' Cormac McCarthy in the other.

So I went with Cormac McCarthy's novel "The Road", largely because I knew he'd written "No Country For Old Men" and my sister swear's on her life that "Blood Meridian" is second to none. Originally written back in 2006, "The Road" has garnered a Pulitzer Prize in 2007 and in 2008, Entertainment Weekly "named The Road the best book, fiction or non-fiction, of the past 25 years." Who knew that Entertainment Weekly was filled with literary geniuses???

Sarcasm aside, the book is about the journey of a man, and his son, along a post apocolyptic road that is leading them south in search of more survival sources and more of the "good guys". They meet anything but along this trip, human civilization reduced to cannibalism and an entire hope vanished in a mysterious world-ending event that is never explained. Readers beware, if it were not for McCarthy's poetic prose I myself would have thrown in the towel after the first 10 pages, it is a VERY bleak and depressing story but again, McCarthy's choice descriptions really bring it along.

Can't say I agree with Entertainment Weekly's review but I read this after I saw the movie and will at least admit the book is better, I was hoping for more explanation in the book as to what happened with the world but the book and movie stay committed to each other. Next up, James Patterson's "Swimsuit", a story I'm sure is on the complete opposite end of the spectrum for the mere fact that the characters actually have names...
